>> reporter: crews on the scene of a crash in san francisco trying to get power back on in this neighborhood. we'll tell you what led up to the crash and the big step pg&e just took to get the lights on. a marijuana club damaged by an overnight fire. why investigators are suspicious about how it started. >> reporter: we're live in petaluma where the community is coming together to help try to find a missing teen.

we'll also tell you the latest clues in the investigation. new unemployment numbers just came out this morning. did the threat of falling off the fiscal cliff put employers -- have employers not to start hiring? good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's friday, january 4th. right now, pg&e is still working to restore power to dozens of customers in san francisco. they lost power after a driver fleeing from police crashed into a power pole in a caltrain parking lot. ktvu's claudine wong has been at the scene since 4:30 this morning and has more. they are making some progress? >> reporter: yes, tori. since we last economicked in with you, we -- checked in with

you, they've made some progress. there was a power pole hanging from the top of the hours and hanging down. the big step was to get that down. now it's laying on the tree. they said once they -- on the ground. they said once they did that, they would be able to fix the power. take a look at this scene right now. it's a mess. it's been that way for more than five hours since this chase happened. it started at 1:50 this morning. san francisco police telling me this actually started as a chp place that ended up down in the streets of san francisco. they say the driver fled from a traffic stop, ended up crashing into the power pole, into a fence and into a caltrain truck that happened to be parked in an employee parking lot. that knocked out the power, the driver fled. san francisco police got on scene and they are righting up

up that accident report for this. the driver is still at large. there were a lot of people without power and then it came down to 100, with a couple big buildings affected. one man who has a business here says he has had to turn off of servers. >> i was doing work on the vpn and then i had to make sure that the servers were shut down properly and that's when i saw the security guard for our building, he told me what happened. i came up here, saw the accident. i went back on the office. shut down all of the servers and new i'm gonna stand here and wait. p. >> reporter: he's still waiting back mere live at fifth and town send. pg&e says they -- townsend. pg&e says they hope to have the power on soon. but for this building, they are who that set up a jen -- gonna

set up a generator for them and it could be hours before they get that power back on. the expanding search this morning to find a missing 19- year-old girl, alist byrne. last -- allysa byrne, last seen at a lake tahoe casino. tara moriarty is live where her hometown is raising money to pay for this search. >> reporter: that's right. we understand the sheriff's office in nevada is gonna hold a press conference at 10:00 this morning. hopefully we'll learn more information. the restaurant behind me, beyond the flory, this is one of -- glory, this is one of four restaurants that will help with the search. alyssa's mother and brother have been by the phone waiting to hear any news while her father has been up in the lake tahoe for the past few days looking for his daughter. search and rescue teams scoured the area by helicopter and snow

knew-- snowshoe. she vanished on new year's eve from the horizon hotel. one friend who said he spotted her in the lobby that night says alyssa didn't seem to be herself. he said she appeared intoxication but was not in distress. so far all of these searches have turned up nothing. >> apparently it was -- it revealed nothing which i was very revealed to find out. you know, i'm hoping -- i'm hopeful that that means she's in an area where at least she's warm. >> reporter: now, investigators have discovered a new signal, transmitted from her phone just minutes after the new year. they are looking into that as well as some tweets. alyssa's twitter account show two final tweets that she just lost trust in the person she trusted the most. that was on the afternoon of

new year's eve. it can't be determined that byrne herself posted those tweets. we want to tell you this morning, starting today, there will be some fudsers, at some restaurants, the first one tonight, maverick's and then tomorrow beyond the glory and then sunday night at pongo's. back to you. >> thank you. investigators in petaluma are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in a mobile home that killed a 90-year-old woman. this was at the leisure lake mobile home park on stone youy road. the mobile home was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. the body of the 90-year-old woman was found in a rear bedroom. firefighters are looking into whether the home had a working smoke detector.

a san francisco man is due in court this afternoon in connection with a deadly crash on new year's day. police say 19-year-old david morales shot three shots at three people and then -- fired three shots at three people. he killed two of them. he seriously inr injured the third -- seriously injured the third. two teenagers charged with strangling a castro valley woman and then setting her home on fire. the 16-year-old and the 18-year- old are being prosecuted as adults. they are accused of breaking into the victim's home in october to steal guns and jewelry. prosecutors say they killed the woman, then came back later to burn down her house and try to cover up the murder. well, new this morning, the jobs report for december just came out. reports show the unemployment rate holding at 7.8%. coming up for you at 7:15 how

wall street is reacting to those numbers. it is 7:07. new this morning, thousands of lights are being installed on the bay bridge. it's part of a huge art project. in march, the bridge will be turned into a light show, 25,000 energy-efficient lights will light up the western side of the span. the entire $8 million project is being paid for by private donations. >> we're 40% of the way there in terms of the installation. very soon we will be able to turn on lights. >> now, this is important, when you drive on the bay bridge, you won't be able to see the lights to prevent distracted drive driving. they will only be visible from the shore line. it looks cool. >> spectacular. >> i think it will be up for two years. with that in mind, hey, sal, can you take is to the bridge -- take us to the

clothing from the store on december 27th. the store says the family came back and stole a coach purse. employees say they tried to stop the family but they were only able to detain the daughter. they arrested her parents. all three 0 are released on -- are released on bail. christina milligan was arrested after reporting that her 9-year-old autistic son was missing. sheriff deputies say they found the boy in a bedroom in milligan's roach-infested apartment. his clothing, they say, was soaked in urine and the apartment was filthy. the boy and his siblings have been turned over to child protective services. from hero to handcuffs. what's next for sergio promo following his arrest in las vegas. and it's dr. mcdreamy verses starbucks. who is winning in the battle to snap up tully's coffee. vñ

control. u.s. troops arrived in turkey to man patriot missile defense batteries near the syrian border. turkey asked nato for help. the u.s., jame and the netherlands installed these missiles in the border area to intercept any syrian missiles. 400 troops will be assigned to the patriot missile. the latest jobs report, it came out this morning, it shows small growth for the u.s. economy. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c., those numbers don't seem strong enough for investors. kyla? >> reporter: economists felt pretty positive about this morning's report but the same can't be said for investors on wall street. we're gonna take a live look at those numbers right now. stocks are up slightly but much of the last 45 minutes they were down slightly. this all comes on the heels of

this morning's jobs report. 155,000 jobs were added in dice. that's up slight -- in december. that's up from november. the unmoment rate held steady at 7.8%. california's not faring as well with 9.8% of the population looking for work right now. taking a closer look at the national numbers, the private sentor added 168,000 -- sector added 168,000 jobs. but the government did cut 13,000 jobs. we have more positive news in morning. a total of 1.84 million jobs were added in all of 2012. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:17. now that she's out of the hospital, hillary clinton plans to keep her pledge to testify to congress about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. secretary clinton was released from the hospital on wednesday after getting treatment for a blood clot in her brain. she canceled scheduled appearances at congressional

employees are in -- employees in san jose are cleaning up at a cannabis club after an overnight fire. firefighters cleared the scene 20 minutes ago. janine de la vega is live to tell us what kind of evidence the investigators will be looking at. >> reporter: fire investigators are back in the office looking over all of the evidence that makes them believe that this fire is suspicious. one piece of evidence that will be critical is that surveillance camera. they want to see if that security camera captured anyone near that window because that's where the fire started. firefighters were called to the

health care cannabis club, which is a medical marijuana dispensary, at 4:30 a.m. they found a small fire in the conference room. the window of that room was broken when they arrived. they smelled gasoline. the sprinkler system has been -- had been activated and that kept the fire small. investigators will be combing through evidence closely to come up with a cause. >> gonna try to piece together the business profession, the way the fire started, where the gasoline was from and all other factors to see if this was caused or was it accidental. >> reporter: a manager of the dispensary says they were alerted by the security company that monitors the club. they reported motion sensors had been set off and smoke was soon by the security cameras in -- was seen by the security cameras inside. they are upset and want to know

if the club was targeted. they are hopeful the security cameras are helpful and captured something. they also tell me they don't grow any marijuana plants they just keep the medical marijuana here. none of their product was damaged. back to you. >> thank you. we are finding out more about what led up to a deadly shooting at the summer breeze apartment complex in san jose on new year's eve. a police report says two maintenance workers confronted cisco reyou a know because they -- christopher soriano because they thought he robbed a car. some people say a lack of police officers is forcing people to take matters into their own hands. >> a lot of them are armed and willing to fight you in order to escape. it's not worth risking your personal safety in order to protect property that can be

replaced. >> officers say 11 vehicles have been stolen from the complex in the past year. while san jose's crime rate continues to gun, san jose police say the number of officers -- to go up, san jose says the number of officers is going down. overnight, several christmas tree fires in san francisco kept firefighters busy. one of them was at 21st and folsom, right there. the fire department responded to at least ten different calls of christmas trees on fire in the streets. law enforcement officials are gonna increase on the ocean beach because of the annual illegal tradition of burning trees on the beach. in san francisco, you can legally put your tree outside on your regular trash collection day. crews in berkeley are investigating the cause of a water main break. it broke upon dwight way about 6:00 last night. now, the workers shut down the water main, cutting off water to about 16 homes during the

night. an underground pipe flooded part of the road. no damage was caused to nearby homes. well, three drivers in vallejo very lucky to be alive after parts of a huge tree crashed down onto their cars. it happened last night on columbus parkway about 6:00. big tree limbs suddenly tracked and -- cracked and fell down, hitting three cars as they drove by. >> i saw the branch falling and i don't know what i thought. you know, it happened so quick and i was just in it. i just hit it. >> two of the cars were damaged while the third one managed to keep driving. 7:34. today, the lasalle high school's coach will make a big announcement. brian flores is in concord where the coach could retire after 34 seasons and now a lot of fans are saying -- hoping it isn't so. brian? >> reporter: hi, tori. you are exactly right. there are a lot of great high school teams throughout the

state. there's even great programs. but the job that the coach has done here in concord is absolutely amazing. after 34 years of coaching, it's being reported that he may step down this afternoon. but whether that means retirement or remains unclear at this time, it's being widely reported it will happen today. the school issued a press release saying -- saying there will be a press conference this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. it didn't specifically mention retirement, only saying it would provide more information about the future development of the program. but the job that the coach has done is just simly legendary in the high school football ranks. he's had the most wins in california history. his 9.34 winning percentage is a national record. from 1994-2004, his team has won 150 games in a row and won

28 nca titles. he's had 20 previous undoe feeted seasons as well -- undefeated seasons as well. he's coached maurice jones drew and he's mentioned retirement before. but it's still unclear whether he will mention it this afternoon. we tried getting some reaction from staff because many students are on winter break. the principal said you are more than welcome to be here but we're not talking until 3:00 this afternoon. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:36. a celebration of life will be held tomorrow for a teacher and former firefighter who died suddenly. 35-year-old ben whitener died last sunday. he's a former east contra costa fire captain. he had to take early retirement because of a work-related injury. he started to teach at freedom high school.

the government unemployment report out this morning sent stocks mostly edging higher in early trading. u.s. employers ad -- added 155,000 jobs in december. taking a live look at the big board, you can see the dow has dipped down into negative territory, down 12. the nasdaq is down 2. the s&p is still up 3. apple stock is down -- apple's stock is down 25% since hitting its all-time high last september. now analysts have mixed forecasts on where the stock is heading. it's currently selling for about $529. it's down 2 1/3. unone analyst is forecasting it will -- one analyst is

told. as many as 15,000 american troops may stain in -- stay stay in afghanistan even after the official 2013 withdraw. that's according to a new plan submitted to the pentagon. now, the low-end option would leave about 6500 troops from afghanistan for counterterrorism operations. while the bigger option would leave 15,000 troops to help train afghan security forces. the plans are now waiting for official approval from the defense secretary. it is 7:48. a new series of ads featuring the word "jihad" is getting a lot of attention. the ads are sponsored by the council on american islamic organizations. the organization says the word is misunderstood by most americans. people we talked with certainly had negative impressions of the word. >> a group of islamic people who are the bad guys. >> it means a -- it's killing

the driver before miss car crashed into a power pole in the caltrain parking lot. now, ktvu's claudine wong has been on this since 4:30 this morning. you are back now. you are in the middle of all of the repair efforts. claudine? >> reporter: and they are making progress. the power pole is gone. they've chopped that off, put it off to the side. in the last 45 minute, a lot of the power has been -- minutes, a lot of the power has been restored. you have one building here still without power. a lot of pg&e trucks out here and they are hoping to get the power back on to that building very soon. but the repairs are gonna take showers. so they have a generator up over there. i want to give you a look at what it looked like out here at 1:50 this morning. just before 2:00, it started to according to san francisco police as a chase on a freeway by the chp but it came down on the san francisco city streets and ended at fifth and townsend when the car they were after crashed into the power pole and

then into a fence and then into a caltrain truck. driver of that bmw took off from the scene and they are still looking for him or her right now and no word on if they've been successful in that. in the meantime, there were a lot of people left in the dark. several people in the beginning and the numbers are stretching into the hundreds but there are now just one building that's still without power. in is video of them trying to hook up a jen prater for the folks in the building still in the dark because they have refrigerators -- refrigeration ires. we talked to some people and they are still waiting. did you know the power was out? >> i didn't know. >> reporter: not until you showed up for work? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: can you work without power? >> no. >> our system is down, our electricity is off, we have no phones or computers. >> reporter: when did you tell them to come in? >> i told them i would call

looking for a missing teenager from petaluma, they will hold a press conference to update their search. tara moriarty is in petaluma where family and friends of alyssa byrne are praying she will be found alive and well. >> reporter: petaluma is a small town. i remember speaking to one of alyssa's friends yesterday. he said everyone here knows everybody. so this missing person's case is really hitting everyone pretty hard. you can see this restaurant beyond the glory. it's one of four local restaurants that are putting on fund-raisers to help in the search. alyssa's mother and brother have been waiting bay the phone. yesterday, investigators scoured the area by helicopter and snowshoe. she vanished on new year's eve from the horizon's casino hotel. she had gone there after leaving an outdoor festival

it is 8:14. new this morning, slow but steady. that's how economists describe the latest jobs report released this morning. kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom digging through the report. there's more on which sectors saw the most growth. kyla? >> reporter: the nation's unemployment rate is steady at 7.8%. 155,000 jobs were added last month which is up only slightly from november. but the labor department points to growth in four specific areas. the healthcare sector boosted employment by more than 45,000 workers. food services added 38,000 jobs. construction is up by 30,000

that normally this medical marijuana dispensary opens up at 11:a.m. they will open late today because they are dealing with a lot of water that was inside leftover from the sprinklers that had been set off. there's one piece evidence that will be critical in this case. there is a security camera outside this building. and the camera -- they are hoping that camera captured anyone near the window because that's where the fire started. now, firefighters were called to the healthcare on zanker road at 4:20 this morning and found a small fire in a conference room. the window of that room was broken and hen they arrived, they smelled gasoline -- when they arrived, they smelled gasoline. the fire was knocked down in 20 minutes. investigators are looking at evidence to come up with a cause. the manager reacted to the news that. fire is being deemed suspicious. here's what he had to say -- >> it's definitely a little bit

upsetting just to have this happen to us, whether it was a firebug or some sort of retaliation for who knows what reason. >> reporter: a manager of the dispensary said they were alerted by the security company that monitors the club. they reported motion sensors had been set off and smoke was seen by security cameras inside. he does tell us there was no damage done to the marijuana products that they sell inside. he also mentioned they've been here three years and haven't had too much trouble. they had a burglary here. nothing was taken at all in this incident. again, there's just -- they are just very disappointed and really want to know who is responsible if it is actually determined that this was, indeed, arson. investigator, still no cause yet or official word from fire investigators but they are telling us that this is suspicious. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. meantime, investigators of petaluma want to know what sparked a dead lie fire that

there. the last four or 5:00 p.m. that i can remember, have split right off the bay area. we did get a few clouds, part goes south, part goes north. this one will split right over us. i just don't trust this system. it looks like we'll get some more light rain out of it. today, though, mostly sunny, high pressure holds it ground and then will back off for a day or two and reload by monday. 40s for some and then 30s. fairfield says 29. 30s an 40s instead of the 27s, 28s. 5 up in tahoe. 30 in sacramento. ukiah, 30 and 29 up in redding. 12 reno. there's some cold air in place. but it will get modified as this system begins to come in. we'll get a south wind and also increase the cloud cover. mt. diablo is 45. there's warm air aloft already settling in. tahoe, maybe some snow late saturday, sunday. this system will weaken before it gets to the mountains.

u.s. an european stocks got a previous boost from plim figures. trading largely flat after the news that the american economy. the dow has turned around. up 22. the nasdaq is flat and the s&p is up 4. the government just proposed the most sweeping food safety rules in decades. the announcement comes after deadly outbreaks among foods of leaffy greens and cantaloupe and peanuts. they want more precaution to be taken in stead of making sure that workers just wash their hands, making sure the water is irrigated and that animals stale out of the field. s an estimated 3,000 people die from food-borne illnesses each year. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following for

trust in a person she trusted most. what do you believe of these tweets. >> i peeve in is a totele will -- i believe this is a totally separate issue. she's had a friend before -- two teenaged girls, a lot of drama, friends one minute, friends not the next -- not the next. so i believe after reading the twitters, that was my daughter's response, whatever. and that she was done with it. >> reporter: the other thing, investigators have discovered a new signal transmitted from her home just minutes after midnight on new year's eve. can you tell us about that. >> yes, it was very optimistic to get one more ping. it was located in an area that they believe is a soccer or baseball field possibly, close by. so the police are still working on that trying to figure out whether it was a known call or a tweet. >> reporter: and did you have information regarding repardon money. >> yes, of as -- as of yesterday, it was about

now we got to head out onto the bridge to see the work being done. one of our photographers got to see the work being done overnight last night. mouses of -- thousands of specially designed lights are being installed on the bay bridge for a huge art project and then the bridge will be thrown into a light show. >> they can be in very light locations and endure the tough locations -- conditions. what we've done, we have a sample of the cable up there. >> this will light up on the western side of the scam. for safety reasons you won't be able to see the lights on the bridge itself. that's to prevent distracted driving. they will only be visible from the shoreline. the entire project is said to cost $8 million. it's being paid for by private donations but another 2 million is needed. the artist says there's opportunities to buy one of the lights as a gift or a dedication to someone.

we have a link on our section of our website, ktvu.com to find out more information about that. tori? >> all right. thank you, pam. ten minutes before 9:00. an albanian family is facing burglarpry charges accused of lying to shoplift from nordstrom in palo alto. police say a 52-year-old man, his wife and their 23-year-old daughter stole men's clothing from the stanford shopping center store on december 27th. store employees came the family came back later that afternoon and stole a coach purse. employees tried to stop the family but were only able to detain the daughter. her parents were also arrested. all three are out on child. christina milligan was arrested after reporting that her 9-year-old autistic son was missing. sheriff deputies say they found the boy inside a bedroom inside of the roach-infested ape. they say his clothes were soaked in urine and the apartment was filthy. the boy and his siblings were

turned over to child protective services. we're finding out more about what led up to a deadly shooting at the summer breeze apartment complex in san jose on new year's eve. a police report says two maintenance workers confronted 36-year-old christopher soriano because thought he robbed several cars at the complex. police say one of the workers admitted to shooting sore reyou a know when he tried to get -- soriano when he tried to get aand now faces criminal charges. dr. mcdreamy plans to be a big star in the coffees about. he says his investment group hopes to win a bid to buy tully's coffee. they are competing against coffee chains like starbucks. tully's filed for bankruptcy protection in october. there are about 47 locations in california and washington state. a bankruptcy judge still has to make the final decision next week. it is 8:5.

minutes ago, the house of representatives overwhelmingly approved $9.7 billion for flood insurance claims from superstorm sandy. in is new video of the house vote this morning. members of congress from new york and new jersey along with the governors of those states were furious when house speaker john boehner canceled a previously scheduled vote on tuesday. under pressure, the house speaker scheduled the vote this morning, plus another vote on january 15th for a larger $51 billion aid package. 8:56. the generosity of a 6-year-old girl triggered a chain reaction of kindness. donna mckenzie is a volunteer with the homeless refuge in link. she says the day before thanksgiving, a little girl named emma brought in her piggy bank and donated it to help the homeless. >> she said tomorrow is thanksgiving. and i have a bed to sleep in with covers and i know. homeless don't have it and enam
